In Welcome to Chechnya, the third film from Academy Award nominee David France, viewers are asked to relinquish the comforts of abstraction. There’s no time for sweeping shots of foreign countrysides, or graphics placing the small Russian republic on a world map. Instead, it is immediately apparent that this is a very real, very dangerous place — one that viewers, no matter how ill-prepared in their understanding of its tumultuous history, must reckon with.
The guerilla-style documentary begins with a man on the phone. David Isteev, the crisis response coordinator for the Russian LGBT Network, is speaking with a young woman using the alias “Anya.” Anya’s uncle has discovered his niece is a lesbian. If Anya does not agree to have sex with her uncle, she says, then he will tell h… Read More
I’m not much of a re-reader of books, but one book I’ve read several times over the years is Thinking in Systems: A Primer by Donella Meadows.
The idea behind the book is a simple one. It proposes that there is value in looking at the problems of the world, from the scale of our own lives to global challenges, in terms of systems rather than separate facts. A system is simply a collection of things that produce a pattern of behavior over time, usually achieving something.
It can be really useful to look at personal finance through that lens, so let’s get started.
Start with the basics.
In our lives, we have certain “pools” of money from which money flows in and money flows out at different rates. We have pocket money, checking accounts, savings accounts and investment accounts — we’ll stick with mostly those three kinds of accounts.
Money flows into those accounts from a variety of places, too. For many of us, the mai… Read More
Parrot’s latest drone is absolutely not for photographers, videographers, and other sundry dilettantes. Its latest Anafi model is far more capable than its consumer models. It’s built to fly in inclement weather for one, and offers loads of zoom power and thermal imaging for surveillance, search-and-rescue, and industrial inspections.
But while the regular Anafi goes for around $700, the Anafi USA is priced at a staggering $7,000. It’s a big jump, but there are reasons for business customers to consider spending the money.
Portable and flies in the rain
The Anafi USA is a small, foldable drone with a nose-mounted camera, and—in a first for Parrot—an airframe that can fly in the rain. It’s small enough to slide into a backpack or messenger bag when folded, and weighs just over a poun… Read More
TL;DR: The sporting goods stalwart Eddie Bauer is currently running a huge Fourth of July sale with 50% off almost everything on its site.
New research from The NPD Group (a New York-based market research firm) indicates that everyone and their mother quarantine buddy is planning on going camping this summer. Ever since April, when parks began to reopen amid easing restrictions, retail sales have been soaring for gear like tents, hammocks, grills, portable power packs, camp sets, and campfire equipment.
It all makes sense when you think about the cabin-feverish spring we had. To quote NPD’s sports industry advisor: Now that it’s warming up outside, we’re all “seeking refuge in the outdoors.” Read more…

Legacy is a powerful thing. In most versions of the legend of King Arthur, it is the king himself who bears the brunt of legacy and stars in the story. But in Netflix’s Cursed, which debuted its trailer on Tuesday, all eyes are on the woman who will become the Lady of the Lake.
Based on the bestselling novel by Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller, Cursed follows Nimue (Katherine Langford), a young woman tasked by her mother with delivering a sword to Merlin (Gustaf Skarsgård) — yes, that sword, “the kind of sword that gets you noticed.” Nimue partners with Arthur (Devon Terrell) — yes, that Arthur — and they take on the quest together while fighting forces that wish to eradicate magic and those who trust it.
